A 7-month-old girl died after she was struck by a stray bullet while sitting in a stroller in Brooklyn.

The shooting occurred on the afternoon of Wednesday, April 1 in the Williamsburg neighborhood of Brooklyn.

NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch said at a press conference that the girl was part of a group of people, adults and children, on a street corner when two men pulled up in a moped around 1:20 p.m. and the one riding the rear opened fire, striking the baby.

The girl’s father rushed her to nearby Woodhull Hospital, but she could not be saved and was pronounced dead about 25 minutes later, police said.

Tisch said that the suspects fled northbound before crashing the moped a few blocks away.

The suspected shooter was thrown from the vehicle with such force that he was knocked out of his shoes, she said, and was taken to the hospital where he was placed into custody on unrelated domestic violence charges, NYPD Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny said. His name was not immediately released, but Kenny said he was a “known” gang associate.

The other suspect fled on foot and had not been captured as of Wednesday evening, but is now the subject of a “massive NYPD manhunt,” said Tisch. He was last seen fleeing towards the Marcy Houses public housing project wearing light grey pants, a white T-shirt and black surgical mask.

After the shooting, the girl’s mother ran to a nearby bodega in a panic, the New York Daily News reported.

Police believe the shooting was gang-related and the girl was not the intended target, said Tisch.

“There are no words that can mend the heartbreak this family is feeling now,” New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani told reporters at the press conference. “I send my deepest condolences to all those carrying the weight of this enormous loss.”
