RI couple identified as victims in fatal MA airplane crash

Two people from Middletown have been identified as the victims in a fatal plane crash in Dartmouth, Massachusetts, on Monday, Oct. 13.

According to Bristol County, Massachusetts, District Attorney Thomas M. Quinn III, the two occupants of the plane were identified as Thomas Perkins, 68, and his wife Agatha Perkins, 66, both of Middletown. Quinn’s office said the two victims “were located with apparent injury in the fuselage and were pronounced deceased on scene.”

One motor vehicle, a silver Hyundai Sonata, was impacted by a portion of the crashed aircraft. The driver, an adult female, was transported to a hospital for non-life-threatening injuries.

At approximately 8:15 a.m., a fixed-wing airplane crashed on the median of Interstate 195 in Dartmouth, Massachusetts. The crash resulted in a fire on the ground.

Upon arrival, first responders located a fixed-wing single-engine Socata TBM 700 that had crashed in the woodline of 195 West before Reed Road.  Parts of the aircraft were located in the woodline, and the fuselage was located in the median of the highway.

The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating the cause and manner of the crash.

Who are Thomas and Agatha Perkins

Thomas Perkins and his wife Agatha Kirby Perkins were longtime residents of Middletown and were active in the community, volunteering for local causes and donating to the Aquidneck Island Land Trust.

Perkins and his brother-in-law, Jerry Kirby, were partners in Kirby Perkins Construction of Middletown, an award-winning firm that has performed historic restoration and preservation work on historic mansions of Newport. Perkins joined the firm in 1987 as a foreman and estimator, becoming a partner a decade later.

The firm has been a member of the National Trust For Historic Preservation, The Preservation Society of Newport County, The Association for Preservation Technology, The Newport Historical Society and The American Institute of Conservators.

Agatha Perkins, known as Aggie, was a certified personal trainer and Pilates and yoga instructor.
