When will it snow on Thursday? Here’s the timeline for winter storm, ice in Oklahoma
Bundle up, Oklahoma, the first significant snowfall of the winter season is about to roll across the state.
The snow, which could include a brief round of sleet in some areas, will impact travel from central Oklahoma into Texas as we head into the weekend.
Freezing temperatures continue Wednesday night
The temperature will dip below freezing with a wind chill in the mid-teens to 20s.
A winter storm warning is in effect until Friday morning for southeastern Oklahoma, affecting Ada, McAlester, Atoka, Ardmore and Durant.
Oklahoma City Public Works crews will report to the city’s maintenance facility at midnight and work 12-hour shifts until street conditions improve. OKC has 32 trucks affixed with salt spreaders and plows, ready to deploy along the City’s snow routes when snow and sleet begins.
Oklahoma City will get about an inch of snow on Thursday
An area stretching from Oklahoma through northern Texas will experience snowfall on Thursday.
The greatest chance for snow is in southeastern Oklahoma, which could see over three inches by Thursday evening. Computer models used by meteorologists suggest that there’s a 50% chance that area could receive five inches of snow.
Areas just south and east of the Oklahoma City metro are likely to see an inch or two of snow. The National Weather Service in Norman said that this part of the state could see a brief round of wintry mix like sleet late Thursday morning, so be careful on the road as you watch out for an icy glaze.
Also on Thursday, while communities north and west of Interstate 44 will likely see less than an inch of snow, if anything.
Cloudy and cold day expected Friday
Winter precipitation is expected to leave the area by sunrise on Friday, but any snowpack will have trouble melting before the weekend.
Oklahoma City’s temperature will likely reach the mid-30s on Friday as the sun returns over a partly cloudy sky.
Seasonal weather returns this weekend
The temperatures this weekend will return to normal for this time of year.
While the daytime temps are expected to again reach the 40s, Oklahomans will still experience freezing on Friday and Saturday nights as the air temperature dips into the mid 20s. While the forecast could change, meteorologists expect this trend to continue into early next week.
