Manhunt for UC Berkeley shooting suspect continues

Two gunshots were fired at the University of California, Berkeley on Thursday morning, the University of California Police Department confirmed to KRON4. The shots were fired in the area of the Clark Kerr campus track, leading to a manhunt in the area.

No injuries were reported in the shooting that occurred at 7:40 a.m., UCPD said.

During the search for a suspect, officials stressed that it was “not safe to be outside” in the areas of Clark Kerr Campus and Hillside Campus, which includes Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, UC Botanical Garden, Lawrence Hall of Science, Space Sciences Lab, Simons Laufer Mathematical Sciences Institute (formerly MSRI), Strawberry Canyon Recreation Area and Golden Bear Recreation Center.

Shortly after 2 p.m., a KRON4 source confirmed that the lockdown had been lifted.

Authorities are searching for a suspect who was described by witnesses as a white male wearing a black shirt, black pants, and a red backpack, according to a campus alert sent out at 9:47 a.m. The suspect’s hair was described as “‘bleached’ with possible red or orange highlights.”

The Berkeley Police Department said it is assisting the University of California Police Department in the investigation. The Alameda County Sheriff’s Office is providing drone support.

Berkeley Mayor Jesse Arreguín was made aware of the incident. The mayor said he was informed it was an active shooter situation around the Clark Kerr track.
