Deadly officer-involved shooting cancels classes at Franklin High School

A man in his 50s is dead after a morning incident led to an officer-involved shooting at Franklin High School on Thursday, Aug. 22.

El Paso ISD Chief of Police Manuel Chavira spoke on Thursday morning and said the isolated incident involved a man in his 50s and a responding police officer outside of the high school.

Chavira said they initially received a report of an incident occurring at the campus and an officer responded to the campus early Thursday morning.

The officer-involved shooting was isolated and it did not affect any students, faculty, or staff. Chavira said there were some cross-country students near the school. However, they were taken to a secure area.

Classes at the high school will be canceled for the remainder of the day. However, classes may resume on Friday, Aug. 23.

Chavira said the investigation is ongoing and the area will be closed off until the investigation is complete. Several agencies are currently involved in the investigation, including the El Paso Police Department.

A spokesperson with the El Paso Independent School District also confirmed that its police department was involved in a shooting at Franklin High School while investigating an early morning incident.

No other information has been released. We are currently working to gather more information on this incident.
