Your favorite artist’s favorite artist says she’s “pumped the brakes” on drawing more media attention to herself. In a Wednesday podcast episode of The Comment Section with Drew Afualo, Chappell Roan opened up about the consequences of her meteoric rise to pop stardom.

The 26-year-old singer said people have begun behaving like “freaks,” adding they “follow me and know where my parents live, and where my sister works. All this weird shit.”

Roan added that she once promised herself that if her fans ever made her or her family uncomfortable, she would step away from music. “If [I felt] stalker vibes [or] like [if my] family was in danger is when I would quit,” Roan said. “And we’re there, we’re there. So, I’m just kind of in this battle, I’ve like pumped the brakes on honestly anything to make me more known. It’s kind of a forest fire right now … I’m not trying to go do a bunch of shit.”

Since the release of her debut album, The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess in 2023, Roan’s career has skyrocketed. Dressed as the Statue of Liberty, Roan drew overwhelming crowds during her performance at Governor’s Ball in June, and informed fans she turned down a White House performance for a Pride month event. Bonnaroo Music Festival was no different, and organizers had to move her show to a bigger stage to accommodate larger crowds.

Since her ascension, Roan has been vocal about her struggles to cope with the sudden stardom. During a performance at the Red Hat Amphitheater in Raleigh, North Carolina, last month, she became emotional as she told the crowd “I feel a little off today, because I think my career is going really fast and it’s hard to keep up.”

“I’m not trying to give you a lesser show,” Roan said at time. “Thank you for understanding. This is all I’ve ever wanted.”
