Brush fire threatens homes in Laguna Beach

Evacuations were ordered Monday afternoon as firefighters battled a brush fire, believed to be fireworks related, that burned near homes in Laguna Beach.

The Rancho Fire was first reported at about 2:15 p.m. in a wooded ravine near homes on La Mirada Street, Katella Street, Summit Drive and Baja Street.

Sky5 live footage showed helicopters and fixed-wing aircraft battling the fire with water and flame retardant as ground crews protected homes with water hoses in this affluent coastal community.

By 4 p.m., fire crews had made significant progress in controlling the blaze, and the immediate risk to property was waning. The fire was estimated at three acres.

The evacuation order impacted homes on La Mirada Street, Katella Street, Summit Drive and Baja Street. An evacuation warning was issued for Arch Beach Heights.

The cause of the fire was under investigation.
