Armed woman arrested near Fruitland Elementary in Salem, school put on lockdown

A Salem woman was arrested Sept. 29 after reports of an armed person near Fruitland Elementary School put the school on lockdown.
Marion County Sheriff’s Office received reports of an armed person at the school at about 2:15 p.m., according to a news release. The school was immediately put on lockdown. It was not immediately clear how long the school was on lockdown or what level the lockdown was.
Deputies arrived within minutes and found a 53-year-old woman across the street from the school matching the subject description, according to the release. Police said a handgun was found nearby.
The woman was taken to the Marion County Jail on charges of disorderly conduct, unlawful use of a weapon and resisting arrest.
The incident was the second lockdown on Sept. 29. At about 9:15 a.m., Richmond Elementary School was placed on lockdown after reports of people with long guns at a house across the street from the school.
Spokespeople from the Marion County Sheriff’s Office and Salem Police said they did not believe the incidents were related.
