Susquenita School District student in custody for school shooting threat, DA says

A student at Susquenita School District was taken into custody for the school shooting threat that caused the district to cancel all classes on Monday.

In a statement from county District Attorney F. Clay Merris, it was revealed that the social media threat was made by a student, who was taken into custody by State Police.

The student will face “disciplinary consequences in accordance with the Student Code of Conduct and School Board Policy,” the district said. State Police say “appropriate charges will be filed” in the case.

State Police say they were notified around 11:30 p.m. on Sunday night of the threat. A screenshot of the social media post obtained by abc27 features a picture of what appears to be a firearm with a caption saying they are going to “shoot up Susquenita District tomorrow,” followed by laughing emojis. Classes were canceled out of an abundance of caution.

The district says after consulting with the State Police, classes will resume on Tuesday with an increase in police on campus.

There will be additional policies in place at the schools, the district said, and also reminded of some that are already in place; Backpacks are still supposed to remain in lockers, and there will be screenings for all visitors, guests, parents/guardians and they must present an ID.

“Thank you for your continued support, and if you hear something, please say something as we are all committed to work together for a safe and secure District community,” the statement reads.

School counselors are also available for students to talk to. The DA added that authorities believe there is no threat to the public or school district.

Because of the student’s age, no information regarding their identity will be released, according to State Police.
